Happy dancing

This time last week I posted that two agents had asked to read the full version of my nonfiction manuscript. Today I am delighted to be able to share with you the news that Judith Murray (Greene & Heaton) is my literary agent! The social intelligence / conscience of Twitter has informed me that not only is Judith Murray lovely and kind; she has also earned the respect of her authors and other agents. I am a very lucky author.

Judith is preparing to present Special Deliveries to any interested parties and I am going to meet her in London on Friday for some more discussion about this. I would like to say thank you to everyone who told me my writing is good enough for an agent and to those of you who left encouraging comments on earlier posts.

As usual, I have writing that wants my attention, but first I think I will indulge in some more happy dancing.

  1. Oh this is fab news, DJ. Well done!

  2. Rachel Green says:

    Congratulations indeed!

Your announcement came at one of the moments when I was trying to figure out where I’m ‘going wrong’ with my writing, and your great news has given me the kick up the bum I needed to stop being so blimmin’ EMO and just get on with my wip!

You were one of the key people who inspired me to get my work out to an agent after I got the rejection letter that I ended up using to draft a recipe for cake lollies on. Thank you.

  4. BucksWriter says:

Very happy for you, anyone who has such great writing discipline (see 5am starts) heartily deserves to be rewarded. X

    • D.J. says:

Thank you for being such a support. The 5am starts didn’t mean I was writing books worth reading though. I do know you like what I write and I am hugely grateful for readers like yourself. I think confidence in your own writing is needed to get the submission out in the first place but writing the right topic well, and at the right time, is the key to actually getting an agent.

  5. Megan says:

    Fantabulous! Very happy for you!

  6. Gaby says:

You so deserve this! I’m SO happy for you!! Judith is indeed lovely, and she’s a great agent – I know she’ll work her socks off for you. Hurrah! *joining in the happy dancing*
PS I love the idea of using a rejection letter to draft out a lolly recipe – they should all be used for such cheerful purposes, I reckon.

    • D.J. says:

Thank you, for everything. It means a lot that you have such huge respect for Judith. She has done amazing things for you but then your novels are worthy of it. I am so excited about The Courtesan’s Lover coming out in September. After reading His Last Duchess I can’t wait to read your second novel. Drafting out the cake lolly recipe on the rejection letter *was* very therapeutic.

  7. That is amazing news Denyse. Congratulations. I’m so thrilled for you. I wish you much success. You deserve it x

  8. Auntnenny says:

Happy Dancing wildly around the house! Probably making a lot of noise but I don’t think it will bother Grammie. I am so proud I could cry (maybe I will). Grammie would be so proud as well I just know it.

    • D.J. says:

      Hi Aunt Nenny,
I knew you would be happy dancing! Poor Grammie…is she still asleep? *sad / scared face* Well I do know for a fact that one of the things Grammie would say to me (besides ‘well done!’) is ‘I hope you are going to do something with your hair before you see your agent’. Just thinking of her saying it makes me giggle. Give her a hug from me please. Love you all up.

  9. Kath says:

I was so pleased to hear your news on Friday, not that you need an agent to be published, as you’ve already demonstrated, but I definitely think they’re very useful people to have on your side.

Deej, you write so well and with such discipline, that you deserve every success, my friend. xxx

    • D.J. says:

I agree. An agent is a support system as well as a conduit to bigger publishers and the rest of the reading world. Thank you so much for your compliment about my writing.

  10. Debs says:

    Congratulations and very well deserved.

I’m no going off to do a little happy dance of my own for you.

  11. Sarah says:

Oh this is wonderful news, I’m so pleased for you.

Congratulations and virtual hugs to you :)

Brilliant news. So pleased for you. More dancing!

  16. Sue Guiney says:

I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. I’m absolutely thrilled for you!

  17. Beth says:

    Excellent news. Congratulations!

    • D.J. says:

Thank you. I am still all smiles. I think I may be starting to scare people who I pass on the way to work on a regular basis :)

So very happy for you, Denyse. Many congrats x x

  20. Cheryl says:

Ah DJ it’s been a delight to have been able to watch what’s happened for you in the past 12 months. I wonder where we’ll both be in the next 12? Life’s such a great adventure!

    • D.J. says:

I couldn’t begin to imagine! Nor would I dare try because I am such an optimistic pessimist (certain something will go wrong). I am doing my level best to take everything one week at a time; no fretting or high hopes allowed! From now on whatever happens with my books once they are finished being written is mostly someone else’s responsibility (what a relief!).

  21. nitebyrd says:

I’m happy dancing for you! YAY! How absolutely wonderful!

    • D.J. says:

Thank you. Can you read while dancing? Here, let me make you a cuppa and you put your feet up while you finish reading the first draft of Love and Other Lies for me….

  22. Judith Murray is my agent, too! That makes us writing cousins!
I lucked out the day Judith took me on two years ago. She sold my book ‘Me and Mine’ published thus July 7th (http://www.littlebrown.co.uk/Title/9781844086726)within weeks and is a complete pleasure to work with.
Congratulations to you. I hope all good things come your way.

    • D.J. says:

Welcome, and thank you for commenting. What a small world! How did you happen upon my blog? I am already enjoying working with Judith (very much so), and feel so much more relaxed now that I have an agent.

  23. Cathy says:

I’m so happy for you. I love the passage from Butterfly Babies, I’m not surprised it got you a great agent.
